Sermon: “When Did We See You?” by Rev. Jim Reisner

Where is God? That’s an age-old question that seems more appropriate than ever. Amidst a world pandemic, school shootings, racial strife, social injustice, crushing poverty, and unending wars, where is God, indeed?

A stranger meets two of Jesus’ followers on the evening of the day of resurrection. They share a spirited conversation on the road to Emmaus. When evening comes, the two reach their destination and the stranger intends to walk on. They entreat him to come to stay with them, and so he joins them for a meal. Only then, when Jesus breaks bread with them, do they recognize him and the Lord.

Where is God? God is present in the stranger.

For most of us, there is only the unattended
Moment, the moment in and out of time,
The distraction fit, lost in a shaft of sunlight,
The wild thyme unseen, or the winter lightning
Or the waterfall, or music heard so deeply
That it is not heard at all, but you are the music
While the music lasts. These are only hints and guesses,
Hints followed by guesses; and the rest
Is prayer, observance, discipline, thought and action.
The hint half guessed, the gift half understood, is Incarnation.

--T.S. Elliott, The Dry Salvages

After worship, we will send people to the Zoom breakout rooms so that people can visit and converse with one another more easily.

We plan to continue to do this on the 2nd and last Sundays of the month.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
