This Sunday’s Worship: April 25

(Sunday, April 25 At 11 AM, Live-Streamed On Zoom)

Scripture:

Psalm 23, John 10:7-16

Hymns:

The hymns this Sunday will reflect the Good Shepherd theme. We will sing two versions of the 23rd Psalm: CRIMOND from the old Scottish Psalter; and ‘My Shepherd Will Supply My Need’ from the Isaac Watts 18th century hymnal. We will close with ‘Savior Like a Shepherd Lead Us,’ the newest of the three, written in 1836.

Service Preview (Online):

Sermon: “By Hook or by Crook” by Rev. Jim Reisner

The fourth Sunday in Eastertide is referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday because the Gospel scripture lesson is always from the 10th chapter of John where Jesus says, “I am the Good Shepherd.”

A Chilean Presbyterian pastor once told me that among Protestant Latin-Americans John 10:10 (“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”) is the equivalent of John 3:16 English-speaking Christians. The sense of Jesus’s abiding and protective care amidst a hostile world, he said, was the essence of the Good News for his immigrant congregation.

“Into your hands, O merciful Savior, we commend your servant. Acknowledge, we humbly pray, a sheep of your own fold, a lamb of your own flock, a sinner of your own redeeming. Receive her into the arms of your mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light.”

After worship we will send people to the Zoom break out rooms so that people can visit and converse with one another more easily.

We plan to continue to do this on the 2nd and last Sundays of the month.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
