Music Notes

The canticle, Magnificat – Song of Mary – is recorded in Luke 1:46-55, and is one of the eight most ancient Christian hymns. Today’s service features the Magnificat, in a musical setting, by the Neapolitan Baroque composer, Francesco Durante. Durante wrote a considerable number of sacred works during his lifetime and was highly esteemed by his contemporaries. However, in 1910 this composition was spuriously attributed to his pupil, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, who is considered one of the greatest of the 18th century Neapolitan composers.  Since there was no known holograph copy (a manuscript handwritten copy with the author’s name and signature) of this work, it was impossible to determine positively the composer and as a result, largely because of the brilliance of the writing, it was attributed to Pergolesi. However, recent research has uncovered a signed manuscript copy in Naples, confirming that Durante is the rightful composer of this much-loved work.

Our services continue to be held in our Sanctuary. People are welcome to come to church for worship, and we will continue to live-stream our worship service.

Facemasks are currently optional at TPPC. You are welcome to wear facemasks during the worship service. We welcome each person to make their own decision about masking based on their particular situation and preference.

We recommend that everyone stay up-to-date with COVID-19 boosters (and other recommended vaccines).

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available at about 10:45 AM).

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service.

We will set an informal and experimental mood, and ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
