Sermon Title: "When God Wants Something Done" by Rev. Jim Reisner

God is in the sending business. When God wants something done, God sends a person. God sent Moses to Egypt so that Pharaoh will let God's people go. God sent Jeremiah to Babylon to promise that at long last God will bring people home. God sent Elijah to undo Ahab and David to take down Goliath. God sent Peter to Cornelius to include the Gentiles in the early church. God sent Luther, Calvin, Knox and Wesley to their moments in time to bring about reform in the church. God sent Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Desmond Tutu, Rick Ufford-Chase, and Jane Spahr because God wanted to get something done.

God sent Jesus into the world as the Word Incarnate to turn the world upside down, to show that God's love is not best expressed as obedience to the Law, but loving people with wild and careless abandon.

The world changes one person at a time. When God wants something done, God doesn't skywrite; God doesn't put on a celestial sound and light show; God sends a person. One new person walking into a room challenges and changes every assumption that has been taken for the way things are and have to be. When God wants something done, God sends a person.

This Sunday we celebrate More Light Sunday. In recent years the Presbyterian Church USA has experienced radical change in our understanding of human sexuality. These changes have occurred not because of great theological insights or any lightning bolt from heaven. The church has changed because God sent LGBTQ Christians who love the Lord their God with all their hearts, minds, souls and strength. Their witness and faith is undeniable, and overwhelming. When God wants something, God sends a person.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service.

We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
