Sermon Title: "How Long?” by Rev. Jim Reisner
“Optimism and hope are radically different attitudes. Optimism is the expectation that things – the weather, human relationships, the economy, the political situation and so on – will get better. Hope is the trust that God will fulfill God’s promises to us in a way that leads us to true freedom. The optimist speaks about concrete changes in the future. The person of hope lives in the moment with the knowledge and trust that all of life is in good hands.” – Henri Nouwen
“Hope dies last.” – Studs Terkel
The 13th Psalm begins, “How long, O Lord, how long?”
This describes our present circumstances precisely. For those of us tired and spent in social distancing, we ask, “How long will this go on?” For those protesting in the streets and all who support them, we are asking, “How long? How long before God’s justice will be realized, and the afflicted find vindication?”
Can we find comfort and alliance with an age old complaint? How long?
I am not optimistic as I look at the world these days through the eyes of two sons in college. I worry about the world they will inherit. There are plenty of reason for pessimism, but there are plenty of reasons to hope.

Pastor Reisner welcomes worship participants to stay after the benediction for a Chat and Chew. People are welcome to share their reflections on the sermon and the themes of our worship.

About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
