Sermon Title: “The Storm Outside; the Storm Within” by Rev. James Reisner

Some went down to the sea in ships …
They mounted up to heaven, they went down to the depths;
their courage melted away in their calamity;
they reeled and staggered like drunkards,
and were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble,
and the Lord brought them out from their distress;
The Lord made the storm be still,
and the waves of the sea were hushed.

Psalm 107

We have all been tossed to and fro this week with the changing landscape of the election. God is both dynamic and constant amidst all the many changes of this life. One thing I know about God is that God has the capacity to still the storm in my own heart.

Whoever wins this election, the church’s call to align itself with the poor and disenfranchised would not change. Jesus’ call to his followers to love stranger and friend alike would not change. The call of Old Testament prophets to defend the widow and the poor, and to establish justice would not change. “But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an overflowing stream.” – Amos 5:24. The work of committing ourselves to God’s love and justice is ever before us, no matter what happens this week.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
