Sermon Title: “Praying for Pharaoh” by Rev. James Reisner
This week, Rev. William J. Barber II wrote in the Washington Post:
“To love a fellow human in a position of power is to confront them for the public sins they are committing that harm vulnerable people … We can pray that both the people affected by bad policies and [the leaders] themselves be spared the consequences of [their] worst decisions. Those who are called to speak to the Pharaohs of this world don’t have to damn them. Our job is to remember his humanity and our own by praying for true healing and using the power we have to build a better world for all of us.”
I have had several conversations lately about how hard it is to pray right now. Our anger and outrage make it hard to pray for people who are doing harm to the poor and the refugee families. How do we pray for the oppressor? How do we pray for Pharaoh?
About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
