Sermon: “Eyes to See“ by Pastor Mark Harper
“There is no way of telling people that they are all walking around shining like the sun.”
Thomas Merton
New Testament theologian Walter Wink once wrote that “we are not easily driven to prayer.” But this week we are. And so let me begin with part of a prayer from the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship:
God,
We sigh. We sigh because words cannot express our anguish, our hurt, our despair, knowing that siblings in Ukraine are fleeing their homes for their lives, that the cities and towns that hold memories and culture and history may be destroyed.
Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans that the Spirit intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. And so we sigh. Let us breathe together. May our sighs remind us that we all share the same air; that what impacts one of us impacts all of us; that life is precious to God and war is never necessary …”
Even as human life and the towns and cities where Ukrainians live come under attack, we find ourselves with an opportunity to cherish the lives and vision of many generations that came before us. This Sunday at 2 pm we hope you will be part of the gathering to rededicate our sanctuary to the glory of God and service to the community. May God’s word of peace and justice continue to flow from this sacred space out into our beautiful yet groaning world.
A week of activity continues on Tuesday with our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Talent Show (perhaps one way to resist evil is to laugh and break bread together). And then on Wednesday, please join our Confirmation Class as they lead our Ash Wednesday Communion Service to mark the beginning of Lent.
Grace and peace,
Mark
About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM).
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service.
We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
