Sister Parish in Jiñocuao, Nicaragua
Jiñocuao
Since 1992, Takoma Park Presbyterian Church has had a sister parish relationship with San José Church in Jiñocuao, a rural community in the northwestern corner of Nicaragua. The relationship has been facilitated by the Council of Protestant Churches of Nicaragua (CEPAD), which is based in Managua, since 2008.
The relationship is primarily spiritual and based on fellowship between the two communities and the two churches. We pray for each other and maintain communications on the lives of our two churches. Over the years, 60 members of the TPPC community have traveled to Nicaragua to spend time in Jiñocuao, in eight official delegations – the last one taking place in 2013. Fifteen people from Jiñocuao have come to Takoma Park as part of four official delegations -- the last one visiting in 2019.
In this 2020 photo of worship at our sister parish in Nicaragua, the woman in black on the right, Manuela, is the same person that is featured as a child in the painting above the entrance to our church. Also seen in this photo are two women, Paula Carrasco and Daysi Martinez, who have visited Takoma Park as members of the four Jiñocuao delegations.
TPPC has provided financial and development assistance to Jiñocuao. The last time was to provide relief from the devastation caused by two hurricanes that hit Central America in November 2020. TPPC raised $1,690 through our holiday poinsettia campaign. This money was used to purchase seeds of corn, beans, sorghum, sesame, tomato, onion, squash, cucumber, and chili for 30 families. The process was administered by CEPAD.
TPPC has a Jiñocuao committee that meets occasionally to keep the relationship moving forward. For additional information on getting more informed or involved, please contact jinocuao@takomaparkpc.org
