Advent Choral Service on December 8

Dr. James Bingham directs the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church Choir with friends and accompanists.

On Sunday, December 8, the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church Choir with Friends will present a special choral service at 11:00 am. The featured work will be the canticle, Magnificat – Song of Mary – by Francesco Durante, which was formerly attributed to Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.

Soloists for this work include Prethi John, soprano, Ekaterina Tomenko, contralto, Robert Martinez, tenor and Bob Mills, bass. The first three soloists are familiar to the church family as they have sung for services before, however, we are pleased to introduce Bob Mills, the Deputy Chaplain of the US Coast Guard, holding the rank of Commander in the United States Navy. All four soloists are former students of Dr. Bingham.

Three other works will be featured during the service:

  • Domine Jesu Christe, a soprano and mezzo-soprano duet with choir and orchestra,

  • I Wonder As I Wander, an adaptation of the Appalachian Carol for soprano solo, and

  • Over My Head, an African American Spiritual for mezzo-soprano, choir, and orchestra.

Denique Issac, soprano, and Patricia Hengen-Shields, mezzo-soprano, will be the featured soloists for these pieces. Denique Issac, also a former student of Dr. Bingham, has previously performed for the church but Patricia Hengen-Shields is new to our community. Both singers are members of the Washington National Opera.

Dr. Mark Di Pinto will be accompanying at the piano, along with a string quintet.
