Sermon Preview:
“Ministers: All the People of the Church” by Rev. Jim Reisner
The priesthood of all believers was one of the primary principles of the Reformation. Its headwaters are found in our text from I Peter: “Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”
What I Peter was saying, what the Reformers were affirming, what this congregation affirms is that there is no religious hierarchy in the church. More accurately, there is a hierarchy, but everyone is a part of it. We are all specialists. We all are given the high honor of sharing the love and justice of Jesus Christ with one another and with the world.
All Christians are considered to have a call to what is commonly termed “the priesthood of all believers;” all are expected to use their lives so as to reveal the grace of the Holy Spirit working through them. It’s a tall order, … it helps to remember Jesus’ statement “You did not choose me. I chose you.”
—Kathleen Norris, Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith
It is pure invention that pope, bishops, priests and monks are to be called the “spiritual estate;” princes, lords, artisans, and farmers the “temporal estate.” [On the contrary] … all Christians are truly of the “spiritual estate,” and there is among them no difference at all but that of office.
--Martin Luther
Hybrid Worship Continues This Sunday
This Sunday will be the last before the renovations begin in the sanctuary. Everyone is invited to worship in the sanctuary this Sunday to watch and participate in a service that will be produced as worship on Zoom. People are also welcome to participate from home.
An announcement concerning the start of hybrid worship at TPPC is available on our blog.
About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 9:45 AM).
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
