Sermon: “Hosanna!” by Rev. Jim Reisner

When Jesus rides a donkey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday he is a lit torch entering a firecracker factory – an explosion is inevitable. Jesus evokes images of the Passover, the prophecy of Zechariah, and the Maccabean revolt, all of which speak of political liberation from an oppressive force. No wonder that merely days later the people turn on him when Jesus preaches the power of love, and not the love of power. Jesus is proclaiming liberation from an oppressive foe, but his enemy is far greater than Rome.

Don’t go from glory to glory and skip the cross, because as Christ’s broken and blessed body you move into this week with only one certainty: that as you enter it, you do so in the company of a self-emptying God who pursues you and saves you with relentless, terrifying love and who ultimately will enter the grave and the very stench of death in order to say, “Even here—even here I will not be without you.” Hosanna in the highest indeed.

There will be palms on the front porch of the church on Saturday morning for members and friends who wish to collect them.

After worship, we will send people to the Zoom breakout rooms so that people can visit and converse with one another more easily.

We plan to continue to do this on the 2nd and last Sundays of the month.

We will gather together on Zoom for an observance of Maundy Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. on April 1st. The service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion as we commemorate the Last Supper and the momentous events of Jesus’ suffering and death on a cross.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
