Sermon: “Our Work is Loving the World” by Rev. Jim Reisner

The Ascension of Jesus into heaven is another one of those Biblical stories that challenge scientific principles. Unless Jesus had a jet-pack on, how did that happen? What I like most about the Ascension story is what happens immediately afterward. Two men appeared from seemingly nowhere and told the apostles, “Why are you gazing up into heaven? Get to work.” In other words, don’t waste time speculating on how that just happened. Focus on what Jesus told you, and do it.

“We are not permitted the luxury of gazing at Jesus’ feet.

No, we must get on with Jesus’ work.”

One Great Hour of Sharing

Palm Sunday went past without TPPC participating in the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering. TPPC Session has decided to collect this offering on Sunday, May 23rd, Pentecost Sunday. In a world of disaster, hunger, and oppression, millions of people lack access to sustainable food sources, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity.

The three programs supported by One Great Hour of Sharing - Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program, and Self-Development of People - all work in different ways to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, their work fits together to provide people with safety, sustenance, and hope. We encourage your support of the One Great Hour of Sharing.

Upcoming Worship

Worship service time will move to 10 AM beginning on Sunday, May 30.

Next Sunday, May 23rd will honor the Jashemski Scholors chosen for 2021. The Stanley A. Jashemski Memorial Scholarship Fund was originally established in 1986 by action of the Session of the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church and through the generosity of the family and friends of Stanley A. Jashemski, a physicist with deep appreciation for the arts. Jashemski Scholarships provide financial assistance for students who demonstrate in their thought and action the broad religious sensitivity characteristic of Stanley and Wilhelmina Jashemski.

Please join us for our annual Memorial Day weekend "Worship on the Steps," which isn't on the steps even in the years we meet in person. On Sunday, May 30, we'll gather on the virtual steps by Zoom. We invite you to take your computer or phone into your garden and we'll sit together. Please join us and come prepared to share.

About Online Worship

We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.

Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
