Sermon: “In a Fearful and Broken World” by Rev. Jim Reisner
At the table of the Last Supper, Jesus promised his disciples that he would not leave them orphaned or desolate. He tells them that God will send to them the Holy Spirit, the Advocate and Comforter. The Day of Pentecost when the Spirit appeared as wind and fire is the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise. What God promises over and over again is God’s presence. We experience that presence as the Holy Spirit.
We remember that your church
was born in wind and fire,
not to sweep us heavenward
like a presumptuous tower,
but to guide us down
the dusty roads of this world
so that we may lift up the downcast,
heal the broken,
reconcile what is lost,
and bring peace amidst unrest.-- Garth House, Litanies for All Occasions
This Sunday we honor the Jashemski Scholors chosen for 2021. The Stanley A. Jashemski Memorial Scholarship Fund was originally established in 1986 by action of the Session of the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church and through the generosity of the family and friends of Stanley A. Jashemski, a physicist with deep appreciation for the arts. Jashemski Scholarships provide financial assistance for students who demonstrate in their thought and action the broad religious sensitivity characteristic of Stanley and Wilhelmina Jashemski.
Upcoming Worship
Worship service time will move to 10 AM beginning on Sunday, May 30.
Please join us for our annual Memorial Day weekend "Worship on the Steps," which isn't on the steps even in the years we meet in person. On Sunday, May 30, we'll gather on the virtual steps by Zoom. We invite you to take your computer or phone into your garden and we'll sit together. Please join us and come prepared to share.
About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
