Sermon Title: “Happiness Isn’t a Room without a Roof” by Rev. James Reisner
As a minister of Word and Sacrament, I pay attention to words. This Sunday I will reflect on the Greek word hupodechomai which literally means "to receive under." In the well-known story, the sisters, Mary and Martha, welcome Jesus under their roof. When Jesus stops during the parade in Jericho to talk to the small man who had climbed out on a limb to see Jesus, and says he is going to eat at his house that day, Zacchaeus gladly welcomes Jesus under his roof.
Hospitality is an important and time-honored practice in both the Hebrew and Greek scriptures. The heat and rugged terrain of the Middle East took its toll on travelers. How longed-for was a roof or a tent that could offer some relief from the noonday heat in a weary land.
In order to show true hospitality, you must have a space where people may be welcomed properly, cared for, and given relief from the struggles of their journeys. You need a good roof.
About Online Worship
We will gather by ZOOM (feed available starting about 10:45 AM). At the moment, Pastor Reisner and a few others broadcast from the church sanctuary while worshipers will be invited to sign on ZOOM.
Directions on how to connect and participate in virtual worship will be sent via a group.io e-mail. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOM we recommend you read up a little before the service. We will set an informal and experimental mood, ask forgiveness as we stumble along our way in a new medium. It will be fun.
